DBNPA is used to control microbial, fungal and algal growth in industrial water systems such as cooling towers, evaporative condensers, air washers, non-potable reverse osmosis units, pulp and papermill effluents, oil-recovery systems, metal-cutting coolants, and air-conditioning systems (effective against Legionella). The effectiveness of DBNPA is reduced as the system pH increases above 8.5, requiring higher feed rates. DBNPA is deactivated by sulphur-containing nucleophiles.
